Sweden Conducts Special Operation on Russian-Crewed Cargo Ship Near Gotland Island
Швеція проводить спеціальну операцію біля грузового судна з російським екіпажем у районі острова Готланд.

Swedish Special Forces Intervene

According to Рубрика — Політика: On October 30th, Swedish police special forces carried out an operation targeting a cargo vessel linked to Russia, positioned in the Baltic Sea off the northwest coast of Gotland Island. During the inspection, authorities reviewed the documents of the crew members, several of whom are Russian citizens, likely originating from the Kaliningrad region. The vessel is connected to a company previously subjected to inspections and searches across various European countries.

The shipping company's headquarters include a branch in Kaliningrad. Ships operated by this company have been spotted near locations where unidentified drones-suspected of serving Moscow’s interests-have appeared. According to Sergey Belyaev, the Russian ambassador to Sweden,

“since late 2025, Swedish authorities have detained five cargo ships with Russian crew members,”

two of which were subsequently released.

Monitoring Hybrid Threats

This operation is part of Sweden’s ongoing efforts to monitor and counter hybrid activities and intelligence operations conducted by Russia in the region. Verifying the cargo ship crew’s credentials highlights growing concerns about potential risks to national security and maritime safety in the Baltic Sea.

The Swedish authorities’ actions demonstrate heightened vigilance over maritime routes amid escalating geopolitical tensions in the area. The increased frequency of inspections on vessels connected to Russia reflects mounting worries regarding security and hybrid threats originating from Moscow. This also emphasizes the critical need for European nations to collaborate closely in addressing potential dangers within the Baltic maritime domain.
