Ukrainian Race Walker Olyanovska Breaks 20-Minute Barrier for Historic 5000m World Record
Lyudmyla Olyanovska's World Record Run
According to Главком: At the Ukrainian Athletics Championships in Kyiv, race walker Lyudmyla Olyanovska set a new indoor world record for the 5000m. Her time of 19:53 minutes made her the first athlete in history to complete the indoor distance in under 20 minutes. This achievement shattered the previous record, held by Italy's Eleonora Giorgi since 2014, by a full eight seconds. Olyanovska is now the second current Ukrainian world record holder in athletics, joining high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who holds the record at 2.10m (set in 2024). Race walking, a demanding endurance discipline, requires athletes to maintain a specific technique while achieving remarkable speed.
Ukraine's Performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics
Amidst these athletic triumphs, the Ukrainian national team concluded the 2026 Winter Olympics without winning a medal. Despite this, Ukrainian athletes delivered impressive performances, securing eight top-ten finishes across various events. The best results included:
- Sixth place - Angelina Brykina, Oleksandr Okipniuk, Dmytro Kotovskyi (freestyle skiing, aerials, mixed team)
- Seventh place - Olexandra Moh and Olena Stetskiv (luge, women's doubles)
- Eighth place - Dmytro Pidruchnyi, Vitaliy Mandzyn, Olena Horodna, and Olexandra Merkushyna (biathlon, mixed relay)
- Ninth place - Olexandra Merkushyna, Yuliia Dzhima, Khrystyna Dmytrenko, and Darina Chalyk (biathlon, relay)
- Tenth place - Kateryna Kotzar (freestyle skiing, big air) and Oleksandr Okipniuk (freestyle skiing, aerials, individual)
Thus, while the medal count was zero, the team demonstrated a high level of competitiveness on the winter sports stage.
Olyanovska's world record underscores the growing potential of Ukrainian athletes on the international scene, particularly following recent Olympic achievements. The consistent top-ten finishes in Beijing, despite the lack of podium finishes, signal that Ukrainian sportsmen and women can compete with the world's best. These successes provide a crucial foundation for future sports development and investment in the country's young talent.
