Timur Mindich Files Defamation Lawsuit Against Yaroslav Zheleznyak

According to Главком: Ukrainian businessman Timur Mindich has initiated a lawsuit against Member of Parliament Yaroslav Zheleznyak. The case, filed with the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv on March 5, seeks to protect Mindich's honor, dignity, and business reputation. Mindich is demanding the MP be compelled to retract statements made on his YouTube and Telegram channels. The lawsuit includes a claim for moral damages amounting to 200 hryvnias (approximately $5 USD), a symbolic sum in such legal actions.

As of the morning of March 9, the judicial panel for the case has not been assigned. This lawsuit unfolds against a backdrop of serious corruption allegations. In November 2025, Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) formally suspected Mindich in the 'Midas' case, a probe into potential corruption at the state enterprise 'Energoatom'. Furthermore, Mindich has been placed on the sanctions list by Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC). Currently an Israeli citizen, he resides in Israel after leaving Ukraine.

Wider Corruption Investigation in Energy Sector

The 'Midas' investigation into alleged corruption schemes within Ukraine's energy sector saw NABU announce suspicions against seven individuals on November 10, 2025, including Timur Mindich (code name 'Carlson'). The other suspects are:

  • Ihor Myroniuk (code name 'Rocket'), former advisor to the Energy Minister;
  • Dmytro Basov (code name 'Tenor'), security executive at 'Energoatom';
  • Oleksandr Zuckerman (code name 'Sugarman');
  • Ihor Fursenko (code name 'Ryoshik');
  • Lesia Ustymenko;
  • Liudmyla Zorina.
'I cannot confirm if this relates to any specific criminal proceedings. This lawsuit directly concerns the statements Mr. Zheleznyak has systematically directed at my client on his YouTube and Telegram channels. The elected official had neither the right nor the authority to disseminate such information,' stated Mindich's lawyer, Vladyslav Tepliuk.

This case highlights the complex interplay between anti-corruption efforts and public discourse in Ukraine. The investigations involving Mindich underscore the critical importance of transparency and accountability in state affairs, particularly within strategic sectors like energy. The lawsuit's outcome could also have significant implications for MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak's political career and reputation, given the accusations of spreading false information.
