Swallow on the MFA: how Shchedryk by Leontovych became a symbol of Ukrainian culture
According to МЗС: Last year, a small swallow appeared on the facade of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, becoming part of the 'Shukai!' project. The initiator of this historical and cultural initiative was a manager from Kyiv, Yulia Bevzenko. The bronze sculpture was dedicated to 'Shchedryk' – the world-famous Ukrainian song written by Mykola Leontovych, who was born on December 13, 1877.
The Ukrainian 'Shchedryk', which inspired the composer to create, tells of the arrival of swallows in spring when New Year was celebrated in Ukraine even before Christianity. The swallow in this song brings joy and a promise of happiness to every home. The miniature bird on the MFA wall symbolizes this very spirit of good.
