Loyalty Over Funding: Trump’s New Demand for NATO Allies
What U.S. President Donald Trump Is Asking of NATO Before the Summit
According to Главком: On the eve of the Ankara summit scheduled for July 7–8, U.S. President Donald Trump has shifted his focus from financial contributions to political allegiance from NATO partners. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who has spent nearly two years trying to maintain stable ties between the Alliance and the Trump administration, presented Trump with a chart dubbed "The Trump Trillion" during a White House meeting. The chart shows that since 2017, European allies and Canada have invested an additional $1.2 trillion in defense.
Trump voiced frustration over allies not backing a U.S. military operation against Iran, stating:
“We don’t need their money-we don’t need anything. I just want loyalty.”
He also hinted he might skip the NATO summit if it weren’t being hosted by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Summit Priorities and Internal Strains
Preparations for the summit have been marked by unease within the Alliance, as Trump places loyalty at the center of his expectations. The main topics on the summit agenda include:
- Continued support for Ukraine;
- Increased defense spending by allied nations;
- The U.S. role in the Euro-Atlantic security framework.
The White House has confirmed that Trump will hold a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the summit.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s biggest challenge remains convincing Trump of the value of collective efforts and allied backing.
This situation highlights the growing friction between the United States and its European NATO partners, which could undermine future security cooperation. Trump’s emphasis on loyalty has raised concerns among countries trying to balance their own autonomy with Alliance commitments. The Ankara summit will serve as a critical test for NATO’s ability to address current threats, including Russian aggression and instability in the Middle East.
As tensions rise over the expectations set for the upcoming summit, the dynamics within NATO are further complicated by disagreements among allies regarding funding and support for Ukraine. This ongoing friction, particularly concerning pipeline financing and aid deadlines, could significantly impact the final statement from the summit.
