The project aims to strip the structure of its symbolic appeal for neo-Nazis. Located near the German border, the house saw Hitler's birth in 1889. The Austrian state forcibly purchased the property in 2017, and announced plans in 2019 to convert it into a police station. Renovation work started in 2023.

Historical Significance and Public Reception

Although Hitler lived in this house for only a few weeks after his birth, its historical weight remains a topic of debate. A stone from the former Mauthausen concentration camp, inscribed with 'Never again fascism,' stands next to the building.

Stefan Mltzoch, head of the historical department at Austria's Ministry of the Interior: 'The goal was to prevent any association with Adolf Hitler, to strip this place of its mystical aura.'

Braunau am Inn Mayor Johannes Waidbacher stated that 'overall, the residents of Braunau have accepted this and can live with it.' Despite the changes, Robert Aiter, a representative of the Mauthausen Memorial Committee, emphasized that 'the world will not forget where the most prolific murderer in history was born. Wikipedia entries won't change.' Thus, converting the building into a police station aims not only for functional use but also to reshape perceptions of this historic site.

This move is part of a broader European trend where countries seek to strip symbols and sites linked to Nazism of their negative associations.
