New rules are being prepared in the Czech Republic for cars with Ukrainian registration. The authorities plan to gradually transfer such vehicles to the Czech Register of Road Vehicles, as well as require them to undergo technical inspection under the same conditions. This was reported by the Czech Ministry of Transport.

Ukrainian cars will start to be registered in the Czech Republic from 2027

The changes are provided for by amendments to the Lex Ukraine law, which is currently being considered by the government of the country.

According to the proposed rules, starting in 2027, owners of cars with Ukrainian license plates will be able to voluntarily register their vehicles in the Czech Register of Road Vehicles.

At the same time, the authorities plan to gradually phase out the existing Information Register of Ukrainian vehicles, which has been used to account for the cars of Ukrainians since the beginning of the full-scale war.

Registration will become mandatory from 2028

If the draft law is finally approved, starting from January 1, 2028, registration of cars with Ukrainian license plates will become mandatory.

After being added to the Czech register, vehicles will receive local license plates and must undergo regular technical inspections under the same conditions as cars owned by Czech citizens.

For newly arrived Ukrainians after January 1, 2028, a six-month period will be provided to register their cars in the Czech Republic.

Significant fines are provided for violations

The Czech Ministry of Transport has warned that after the new rules come into effect, sanctions may be applied for non-compliance.

Among the possible measures are:

  • a fine of up to 30,000 Czech crowns (about 57,000 UAH) for the driver;
  • a fine of up to 50,000 Czech crowns (almost 95,000 UAH) for the owner of the vehicle;
  • confiscation of license plates;
  • temporary seizure of the vehicle.

In addition, starting in 2028, cars with Ukrainian registration that are not registered in the Czech register will not be able to be legally operated in the country.

Separately, the draft law allows Ukrainians who are in the Czech Republic under temporary protection or a tolerance visa to register cars purchased directly in the Czech Republic. Such vehicles will also be issued Czech license plates.

It is worth noting that in the Czech Republic, they want to deny Ukrainians temporary protection after 30 days of absence from the country.
