Ark III Mobile Lab Launches in Chernihiv to Digitally Preserve Museum Treasures
The Arrival of Ark III Mobile Lab in Chernihiv
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Chernihiv has welcomed the debut of the Ark III mobile laboratory, a cutting-edge unit dedicated to creating digital replicas of museum artifacts and historical monuments directly at their storage locations. This marks the first field deployment of the system, developed under the auspices of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra Reserve. The initiative focuses on safeguarding, studying, and restoring cultural heritage, with special attention to regions affected by Russian military attacks.
Designed by Czech experts, the Ark III mobile lab is engineered to operate under crisis conditions and in war-impacted areas. Housed within a Volkswagen Crafter vehicle, the lab is equipped with advanced 3D scanners and photogrammetry technology. This setup enables the production of precise digital copies ranging from small items to large architectural structures. Its mobility allows specialists to work on-site across multiple cultural institutions without needing to transport fragile objects.
The Project’s Significance and Impact
The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine highlights the critical role of this project in advancing digital tools for cultural heritage preservation.
“Digitizing cultural heritage goes beyond adopting modern technology-it is a vital method for protecting assets during wartime. High-precision digital copies document the condition of museum objects, preserving valuable information for future generations, research, and restoration efforts. It is especially crucial that such technologies are accessible to institutions in frontline areas where heritage is constantly at risk,” said Anastasiya Bondar.
The Ark III laboratory was officially handed over to the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra in May 2026, with Ukrainian professionals completing initial equipment training that same month. Further training sessions continued in September 2026. The Ark for Ukraine project forms part of the international 'Support Ukrainian Culture' initiative, launched by Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the National Museum of the Czech Republic and the Karel Komárek Family Foundation (KKFF).
Additionally, a ceramic artwork by Ukrainian artist Vasyl Melnyk was transferred to the Vasyl Krychevsky Poltava Regional Museum for restoration and preservation. This piece was rescued during renovation work at the Children’s City Clinical Hospital swimming pool.
In today’s challenging environment, projects focusing on digital preservation and restoration of cultural valuables have become increasingly vital. The Ark III mobile lab represents a significant advancement in protecting Ukraine’s cultural legacy amid ongoing conflict, when many monuments face constant threats. By providing museums and cultural organizations with access to state-of-the-art documentation technologies, this initiative plays a crucial role in safeguarding historical memory. Efforts like Ark III also underscore the importance of international cooperation in culture and scientific research, which can support Ukraine’s recovery and preservation of its rich heritage.
The launch of the Ark III mobile lab not only addresses immediate preservation needs but also complements ongoing initiatives to showcase Ukrainian cultural heritage abroad. Recently, London celebrated the exhibition of sacred treasures from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, highlighting the global interest in preserving and sharing Ukraine's rich history. This synergy underscores the importance of both local and international efforts in safeguarding cultural assets during challenging times.
