Olena Shargovska: A Warrior, Journalist, and Advocate
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: On October 27, Kyiv bid farewell to Olena Shargovska, a military paramedic, journalist, and veteran who tragically died on October 24. Known by her call sign 'Jane,' Olena dedicated many years to saving the lives of Ukrainian soldiers, serving in medical battalions, defending women's rights in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and engaging in volunteer work. Her passing was announced by representatives of the medical volunteer battalion 'Hospitallers.'
Journalism and Volunteer Service
Olena’s career spanned media, television, and print journalism. She contributed to projects such as Ukraїner and 'Osvitoria,' with her professional roles including journalism, translation, editing, and managing social media communications. In 2015, she volunteered at the First Volunteer Medical Hospital named after Mykola Pirogov before joining the 'Hospitallers' medical battalion. She mastered tactical medicine and frequently traveled to the most dangerous front-line zones to evacuate the wounded.
As a passionate advocate for women’s rights within Ukraine’s military, Olena co-organized the 2016 'Invisible Battalion March' in Kyiv, demanding equal access to military positions for women. She was also an active member of the Women Veterans Movement, fighting to ensure female defenders received proper gear. When the full-scale Russian invasion began, Olena was in Portugal recovering from an injury but continued to support the cause as a volunteer.
On September 10, 2022, her birthday, Olena officially enlisted in the Ukrainian Armed Forces' International Legion. She provided tactical medicine training to soldiers and took part in medical evacuations. Due to health reasons, she left military service in August 2024 but remained deeply involved by organizing charity efforts and purchasing vehicles for front-line needs.
“Jane braved the fiercest frontline zones to evacuate the wounded and fought tirelessly to save Ukrainian soldiers during medical evacuations to stabilization points,” highlighted Yana Zinkevych, emphasizing Olena Shargovska’s vital role in the country’s defense.
Olena’s death is a profound loss for Ukrainian society. She will be remembered not only as a dedicated paramedic but also as an activist who championed women’s rights in the military. Her commitment to defending Ukraine and supporting its servicemen and women underscores the crucial impact of volunteer efforts and the increasing role of women in the Armed Forces during this ongoing conflict.
Olena Shargovska's legacy as a dedicated advocate and soldier mirrors the stories of many remarkable individuals who have shaped Ukraine's history. For instance, the recent passing of Ukraine’s oldest resident, Olena Rybalko, who survived the Holodomor and supported insurgents, highlights the resilience and strength of Ukrainian women throughout the decades. Both women exemplify the spirit of courage and commitment to their country, making their stories essential to understand the broader context of Ukraine's struggles and triumphs.
