According to Главком: A rare solar halo was recorded above Bahrynova Hill in Kyiv on May 8. This atmospheric optical phenomenon occurs when sunlight refracts and reflects off ice crystals in the air. The sighting was confirmed by the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory.

While halos are fairly common in Ukraine-occurring 70 to 120 times annually-bright, vivid displays appear only 10 to 20 times per year. They are most often seen in cirrostratus clouds. The most typical form is a faintly colored ring around the Sun or Moon. Frequently, bright colored spots appear on either side of the Sun, known as sundogs or parhelia. Other halo variations include:

• a bright colored arc centered at the zenith
• a zenith arc
• light pillars extending upward and downward from the celestial body
