World Press Photo 2026 Exhibition Opens in Lviv

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: For the first time, Lviv is hosting the international World Press Photo 2026 exhibition at the Lviv Palace of Arts. This event showcases the prize-winning photographs from one of the most prestigious photojournalism competitions worldwide, including works by Ukrainian photographers. The exhibition is part of the city's "Responsibility to Be" program within the framework of the "European Capital of Culture 2030" contest and will be on display until November 22.

Award Winners and Their Stories

The World Press Photo 2026 contest received 57,376 submissions from 3,747 photographers representing 141 countries. An independent international jury selected the winning images. Among the laureates is Ukrainian photographer Yevhen Maloletka, who earned recognition in the Single Image category for the European region with his photo titled "Russian Attack on Kyiv." His image captures a wounded woman standing near a destroyed home following a Russian shelling of Kyiv on April 24, 2025. This attack resulted in 13 fatalities and approximately 90 injuries. However, Maloletka's photograph was not displayed in the Lviv exhibition at the request of the subject to prevent further trauma.

This exhibition has been presented in Ukraine for the third consecutive year by the Odesa Photo Days Festival, previously seen in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa, and Lutsk. The project is realized in partnership with the Institute of Cultural Strategy and the Lviv Palace of Arts as part of the "Responsibility to Be" city initiative. Founded in the Netherlands in 1955, the World Press Photo Foundation supports documentary photography and photojournalism worldwide. The 2026 exhibition tour began on April 24 in Amsterdam.

Throughout the year, the winning photographs are showcased at over 60 venues globally. The main themes of the World Press Photo 2026 entries include:

  • conflicts and wars
  • social and political transformations
  • climate change challenges
  • personal narratives
Kateryna Radchenko remarked, "The World Press Photo competition is incredibly important not only for photography but also for understanding global events. It presents diverse stories from different continents: wars, economic and environmental changes, the lives of small communities, and personal experiences."

Since 2022, Ukrainian photographers or photo series depicting events in Ukraine have consistently been among the winners. This highlights that "our war, our story remain significant to the world, and through this exhibition, these stories reach audiences across various countries." Yulia Khomchyn emphasized that "photography often represents a complete story or testimony to major phenomena or processes." She also noted the importance of Lviv joining the network of cities hosting the World Press Photo exhibition.

The Lviv exhibition is a significant cultural event, offering visitors a chance to engage with pressing global issues through powerful photographic storytelling.

The debut of the World Press Photo exhibition in Lviv underscores Ukraine’s vital role in the international photojournalism arena, especially amid ongoing conflict. The presence of Ukrainian winners reflects how their narratives resonate worldwide, raising awareness not only of artistic achievements but also of complex social and political realities faced by countries including Ukraine.

As the World Press Photo 2026 exhibition highlights significant moments captured through the lens, it's worth noting other photography initiatives in Ukraine. For instance, the Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the Luhansk region showcases local photographic talent and runs until October 31, further emphasizing the importance of documenting cultural heritage through photography.
