Explosions and Blackouts Hit Mariupol and Donetsk Following Drone Strikes

Drone Attacks Target Occupied Territories

According to Главком: On the night of May 22, the occupied cities of Mariupol and Donetsk came under drone attack. A substation in Nikolske was hit, cutting off electricity to parts of the Mariupol district and several neighborhoods within the city itself. Propaganda outlets reported that the blackout affected nearly the entire city as a result of the UAV strikes.

This is not the first time drones have struck the temporarily occupied areas of Donetsk region. On January 18, a series of explosions targeted energy infrastructure, leaving the Kirovsky and Kuibyshevsky districts of Donetsk without power. Earlier, on January 14, drone attacks on substations in the occupied zone triggered blasts in both Donetsk and Makiivka.

Impact on Power Grid Highlights Conflict's Toll

Another blackout occurred in Mariupol on the night of January 13 following a UAV assault. According to Petro Andriushchenko, head of the Center for Studying Occupation,

“a fire broke out near the Donetsk highway in Mariupol. Preliminary reports indicate a substation in the Kalmius district is burning. Additionally, occupier bases at the Ilyich Iron and Steel Works may have been hit. Detonations can be heard.”

Power outages were widespread across many areas of occupied Donetsk region.

These strikes on the energy infrastructure of occupied territories underscore the ongoing conflict and its severe impact on civilians. The destruction of substations disrupts daily life for residents already struggling without basic services. The pattern also suggests a shift in military strategy, with a growing focus on crippling key enemy infrastructure.

The recent drone strikes on Mariupol and Donetsk highlight a disturbing trend in the ongoing conflict, where critical infrastructure continues to be targeted. In a similar incident, a mine in Snizhne was struck, resulting in significant damage and a fire, further illustrating the conflict's toll on both the economy and civilian life in the region.
