Poland is reviewing its military legislation to prepare for a possible armed conflict. The authorities are analyzing the experience of Ukraine during the full-scale war and are considering increasing penalties for violations of military discipline, including sentencing up to 30 years for certain crimes. This is reported by Polsat News.

Poland is reviewing military legislation based on Ukraine's experience

The Polish government has tasked relevant agencies to analyze current legislation and identify provisions that may be ineffective in the event of war. According to Minister of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak, Warsaw is taking lessons from Ukraine, which had to quickly amend several laws following the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

«We are looking to Ukraine for changes that it had to implement very quickly since it was caught off guard by the war, and its existing legislation was not prepared for this», the minister stated.

At the same time, he emphasized that no final decisions have been made yet. According to him, the main goal of the reform is to create a legal framework that will ensure effective defense of the country in case of threat.

Penalties for military personnel in Poland: what changes are being discussed

The Ministry of Justice has already prepared an analytical document with proposals for amendments to the Criminal Code. The main focus is on issues of military discipline during combat operations.

Among the proposals currently being discussed:

  • significant strengthening of penalties for disobedience;
  • up to 30 years of imprisonment for serious violations, including refusal to obey orders in combat;
  • the possibility of life imprisonment for the most serious military crimes.

The Polish government emphasizes that all these initiatives are still at the stage of analysis and public discussion.

At the same time, Poland continues to strengthen its defense capabilities. Under the program «Eastern Shield», the country is expanding military training for the population. Over 20,000 people have already signed up for voluntary training, which is a record number.

It should be noted that Polish workers are among the most overworked in the European Union. In 2025, the average working week in the country was 38 hours, significantly exceeding the average across the EU.
