Russian Spies Captured in Rivne and Khmelnytskyi: How the Network Operated
Spy Arrests in Rivne and Khmelnytskyi
According to Главком: Ukrainian authorities have detained individuals accused of spying for Russian intelligence services in the cities of Rivne and Khmelnytskyi. In Rivne, a 28-year-old Russian citizen was arrested on suspicion of espionage for Russia. The detention is part of an investigation under Article 114 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which deals with espionage, and the suspect faces up to 15 years in prison with property confiscation. He is currently in custody without the right to post bail.
The suspect arrived in Rivne in 2021, presenting himself as a resident of Russia's Krasnoyarsk Krai with Ukrainian relatives. His activities involved collecting contact information for soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Special Operations Forces and attempting to obtain their personal data. Officers from the Security Service of Ukraine's (SBU) military counterintelligence unit apprehended the spy during the final stage of a special operation. According to available information, the detainee served as an intelligence officer for Russian military intelligence from 2018 to 2019.
Agent Activity in Khmelnytskyi
Separately, in Khmelnytskyi, an agent of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) was detained for spying on Defense Forces deployment sites. Her task was to install concealed video cameras opposite buildings where military personnel might be located. After activating the devices, the agent was to provide remote access to the collected information for Russian intelligence services.
These incidents highlight the ongoing activity of Russian agent networks within Ukraine and the efforts of law enforcement to combat them. Such operations are part of a broader pattern of intelligence gathering targeting Ukraine's military capabilities since the onset of the full-scale invasion.
The arrests in Rivne and Khmelnytskyi underscore the persistent tensions between Ukraine and Russia, as well as the continuous attempts by Russian special services to access information related to the Ukrainian army. This emphasizes the critical role of Ukrainian law enforcement agencies in ensuring national security and identifying threats posed by foreign intelligence operations.
