Fake Combat Medals in Russia: A Growing Crisis

According to Главком: Russia's Public Chamber has sounded the alarm over an unchecked surge in counterfeit military awards. Citizens are reportedly buying replica medals on online marketplaces and masquerading as war veterans. This trend has become so widespread that impostors are now showing up in schools and government offices, raising serious concerns among both the public and state authorities.

Root Causes and Consequences

According to reports, any civilian in Russia can easily purchase fake military decorations online, including replicas of medals from the Wagner Group and Russia's Ministry of Defense. This has led to a situation where private organizations and individuals are producing their own unofficial awards that closely resemble state-issued ones, further complicating efforts to regulate the system. Meanwhile, official award orders from the Ministry of Defense and the FSB remain classified, making it nearly impossible to verify the authenticity of medals.

Wearing fake awards carries a fine of just 1,000 to 1,500 rubles, but this has done little to deter those seeking to inflate their status. In one case, a Russian individual explained:

“we just want more medals.”

The Kremlin appears unable to stem the tide of fakes now sweeping the country, fueling public unease.

This growing problem not only affects individual cases but also undermines the reputation of genuine veterans and state honors. As distrust in official institutions rises and the award system lacks transparency, society faces new challenges that could threaten social stability and patriotic education. Finding effective ways to combat this phenomenon and restore faith in veterans and their achievements will be critical.
