Rising Propaganda Pressure Against Migrants in the United States

According to Главком: The United States is experiencing a surge in propaganda aimed at turning public opinion against immigrants. Former Glavcom journalist Tetiana Kotenko revealed in an interview that the anti-immigrant rhetoric of Donald Trump’s new administration has seeped into every aspect of American life, even affecting those who have never followed politics. She explained that through television channels and pro-government media outlets, Americans are being fed the message daily that newcomers are to blame for the country’s economic and social woes.

Kotenko, who has lived in the US since the full-scale invasion began, noted that crime rates have worsened and that migrants are being blamed for it. 'From morning until night, people are told that the crime situation has deteriorated because of migrants. Gas prices went up-again, because of migrants. Even completely apolitical citizens are gradually absorbing this information from pro-government channels,' she stated.

The Impact of Anti-Immigrant Rhetoric

Recently, there have been instances where neighbors have started reporting their migrant neighbors to authorities over minor grievances. Kotenko cited a case in Minneapolis where a woman hired Latino migrant workers to repair her roof for cash. 'In Minneapolis, a woman called in migrant workers to fix her roof. To avoid paying them, she simply reported them to ICE. Those undocumented workers were arrested,' Kotenko recounted.

Kotenko also emphasized that many Americans support the anti-migrant movement due to the negative information surrounding it. 'I don’t understand why this is being done, because the migrants leaving are the ones doing undesirable jobs, like caring for the elderly for very little pay,' she added. In her view, the Trump administration aims to free up these positions so that Americans themselves will take them.

US President Donald Trump, during a visit to Scotland, stated that immigration is 'killing Europe.' He argued that the immigration situation needs to change and called for action.

'On immigration-you’d better get a grip. Otherwise, you won’t have Europe anymore. You must stop this terrible invasion that is now happening in Europe,' Trump said.

The rise in anti-immigrant rhetoric in the US is unfolding amid intensifying political debates over immigration policy. As crises like economic hardship and social tension mount, migrants are frequently scapegoated for societal problems. This trend could have serious consequences for social integration and interethnic relations, as worsening attitudes toward migrants may fuel xenophobia and social conflicts.

The rising tide of anti-immigrant sentiment is not only affecting public opinion but also shaping policies that influence the lives of those seeking refuge in the U.S. As highlighted by Kotenko, recent changes in legislation have led to a significant exodus of Ukrainian refugees, further complicating the already tense climate.
