Massive Nighttime Strike on Kyiv

According to Главком: On the night of May 24, Kyiv faced a heavy missile assault. According to information provided by Defense Ministry advisor Serhiy Flesh Beskrestnov, the attack did not introduce any technological innovations. Instead, the enemy focused on sheer missile volume to overload Ukraine’s air defense system (ADS). It was noted that Shahed drone interceptors accounted for over 40% of all downed Shaheds.

The assault was carried out using Shahed attack drones, which approached Kyiv from the north. The drones deployed included the Geran-3 and Geran-4 models. During this strike, no attempts to control the drones from Belarus were recorded. Serhiy Flesh Beskrestnov stated that the targets in Kyiv were chosen by the adversary as a formal pretext for terrorizing civilians. He emphasized:

“I believe the targets in Kyiv were selected by the enemy solely as an excuse to strike the city.”

The attack damaged the building of the Cabinet of Ministers, as well as two large residential complexes near the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. The blast wave caused destruction to high-rise civilian infrastructure in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district. Additionally, in Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region, cleanup operations are ongoing following an attack involving the Orieshnik system.

Serhiy Flesh Beskrestnov noted:

“Regarding the Shaheds, the Defense Forces performed better than the average over the past six months.”

According to him, the positive trend in the work of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense and Defense Forces over the last four months is clear. However, he also cautioned that ‘it is too early to draw conclusions,’ since the entire strike was concentrated on Kyiv, unlike previous attacks that also targeted western parts of Ukraine.

Ongoing Threat

The attack on Kyiv on the night of May 24 underscores the persistent threat from the aggressor and the challenges faced by Ukrainian defense forces amid the war.

This assault is part of a broader enemy strategy that includes not only military operations but also terrorist acts aimed at destabilizing civilian life. The high rate of intercepted drones highlights the improving effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense, but also points to the need for continuous upgrades to defensive systems. The situation remains difficult, and further attacks are likely given the current military context.

The recent missile barrage on Kyiv highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Ukraine’s air defense forces. In contrast, reports indicate that Ukrainian air defense systems have achieved a remarkable interception rate during previous assaults.
