EU Loan for Ukraine Blocked

According to Главком: Hungary has announced it is blocking a €90 billion European Union loan package for Ukraine until the transit of Russian oil through the 'Druzhba' pipeline is restored. This decision stems from the requirement for unanimous approval from all 27 EU member states for the financial aid, which EU leaders had already agreed upon back in December. This move highlights the ongoing political tensions within the EU regarding support for Ukraine.

Hungary's ambassador to the EU has also objected to the method of raising funds for Ukraine through the issuance of EU budget-guaranteed debt. According to reports, Ukraine could face a funding shortfall as early as this spring, creating additional strain amid its current economic challenges.

Hungary's Demands

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated: 'We are blocking the EU's €90 billion loan to Ukraine until oil transit to Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline is resumed.'

He further emphasized that 'we will not give in to this blackmail,' underscoring Hungary's resolve on the issue.

The situation is causing concern in Ukraine, as the delay in funding could negatively impact the country's economic stability. Budapest continues to insist on its demands, creating additional hurdles for the European Union's continued support of Ukraine.

The holdup of the EU loan could have serious consequences for Ukraine's financial situation, which is already grappling with economic difficulties. Blocking this assistance may hinder the implementation of vital socio-economic programs and budget stability. Simultaneously, Hungary's stance underscores the challenges the European Union faces in achieving unity on financing matters for member states and their neighbors.
