Hungary Signals It May Lift Its Veto on Ukraine’s EU Membership Talks
EU Accession Talks Could Soon Begin
According to Главком: Ukraine is now closer than ever to launching the first round of negotiations for joining the European Union. According to four European diplomats, Hungary has signaled it is prepared to drop its objections-obstacles that have stalled the process-following consultations focused on the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine’s Transcarpathia region. If a compromise is reached, both Ukraine and Moldova could be given the green light to start talks at an intergovernmental conference scheduled for June 15 in Luxembourg.
The discussions between Ukrainian and Hungarian officials specifically addressed the legal protections and cultural rights of the ethnic Hungarian community in Transcarpathia. During these talks, Ukrainian representatives put forward proposals that meet most of Budapest’s demands. Notably, Hungary is not insisting that all legislative changes be enacted immediately. However, Budapest has not yet officially confirmed any shift in its position.
As one Hungarian official put it: 'No decision has been made yet. Negotiations are ongoing. No agreement has been reached.'
In the coming days, EU ambassadors are expected to finalize their collective stance. Kyiv must also present updated reform plans and additional measures related to the protection of minority rights. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has urged EU member states to open the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine, underscoring how crucial this step is for the country’s deeper integration into the European community.
Why These Talks Matter
Successfully launching EU accession negotiations would mark a major milestone in Ukraine’s European integration, strengthening its standing on the global stage. Key to this process is not only advancing necessary reforms but also ensuring the rights of national minorities-a critical factor for regional stability. Developments over the next few days could significantly shape Ukraine’s future within the EU and influence its diplomatic ties with neighboring countries.
As Ukraine navigates this pivotal moment in its EU accession journey, the support from key European leaders becomes increasingly vital. In a related development, Germany's Chancellor has called for the EU to initiate the first phase of negotiations with Ukraine, highlighting the importance of timely action to bolster Ukraine's integration efforts and strengthen its position within the European community.
