Hungary Imposes Entry Ban on Ukrainian Citizens

According to Главком: Hungary's government has decided to bar three Ukrainian citizens from entering the country and the wider Schengen Area. The individuals subject to the ban are Lieutenant General Hryhorii Omelchenko, commander of the 413th Separate Regiment Yevhen Karas, and political analyst Borys Tizenghauzen. The announcement of these restrictions was made by Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister's Office for Viktor Orbán.

Context and Consequences

This is not the first instance of Hungary imposing restrictions on Ukrainian citizens. In the summer of 2023, Hungarian authorities banned the entry of a commander from a Ukrainian military unit that had attacked the 'Druzhba' oil pipeline. Robert Brovdi, Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, commented on this ban, highlighting its political context. The move occurs amidst Hungary's ongoing, often contentious, diplomatic stance regarding the war in Ukraine, which has frequently put it at odds with other EU members.

"In the upcoming elections, Hungarians will prove they are choosing between my government and the policies of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy" - Viktor Orbán

Speaking on the anniversary of the 1848-1849 Hungarian Revolution, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that Hungarians in the forthcoming elections would have to choose between his government and the policies of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The elections in Hungary are scheduled for April 12. In turn, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would support whichever winner of the Hungarian parliamentary elections is not an ally of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and who wishes to build good neighborly relations with Kyiv.

These events underscore the escalating tension between Ukraine and Hungary, arising against the backdrop of political maneuvers by the Hungarian government. The entry ban on Ukrainian citizens may be perceived as a signal of Hungary's support for policies that could be hostile toward Ukraine. The approaching elections in Hungary could significantly influence future relations between the two countries, particularly if a new government chooses a course of strengthening ties with Russia or, conversely, of restoring good neighborly relations with Kyiv.

The recent entry ban on Ukrainian citizens by Hungary adds another layer to the ongoing tensions between Hungary and Ukraine, especially in light of the EU's response to Hungary's stance on Ukraine. As relations deteriorate, the European Union is considering actions against Hungary over its blockade of aid to Ukraine, which could further complicate the diplomatic landscape in the region.
