Hungary Detains Seven Ukrainians, Including Ex-Spy Chief, in Money Laundering Probe
Ukrainian Citizens Detained in Hungary
According to Главком: Hungary's National Tax and Customs Administration has detained seven Ukrainian citizens, among them a former general of a Ukrainian intelligence service. The detentions are linked to a money laundering investigation concerning the transport of valuables from Austria to Ukraine. The Hungarian investigation is being conducted with support from the Counter-Terrorism Centre, and Hungarian authorities have already informed the Ukrainian consulate about the case's initiation.
In response to the detentions, Oschadbank expressed concern over the seizure of its employees, armored vehicles, and valuables during a cash transit operation through Hungarian territory. The incident occurred on March 5 during a transfer between an Austrian bank and Ukraine. The Ukrainian side has sent an official diplomatic note demanding the immediate release of the detainees.
Statement from Ukraine's National Bank
The National Bank of Ukraine has also issued a statement condemning the seizure of Oschadbank's armored vehicles and the unlawful detention of its staff in Hungary. Notably, Ukrainian consular officials have been denied access to the Oschadbank employees being held in Budapest.
In essence, Hungary is taking hostages and stealing money. If this is the 'strength' Mr. Orbán spoke of today, then it is the strength of a criminal gang. This is state terrorism and racketeering.
