Hungarian Authorities Detain Ukrainian Bank's Cash Transport

According to ХВИЛЯ: On March 6th, Hungarian law enforcement intercepted two armored vehicles belonging to Ukraine's state-owned Oschadbank. The vehicles, which were traveling from Austria to Ukraine under a formal agreement with Raiffeisen Bank, were found to be carrying substantial sums of cash and gold. The seized assets included:

  • $40 million
  • €35 million
  • Approximately 9 kilograms of gold

Seven Ukrainian citizens were taken into custody during the operation. This incident occurs against a backdrop of deteriorating diplomatic relations between Kyiv and Budapest, which have been strained since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Escalating Diplomatic and Economic Tensions

Hungary's National Tax and Customs Police have launched a criminal investigation, citing suspicions of money laundering. Budapest claims it notified Ukrainian consular services of the detention but received no response. On the same day, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry advised its citizens against travel to Hungary.

The political climate has grown increasingly hostile. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has threatened to block the transit of crucial cargo to Ukraine unless it resumes pumping Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. In a related move, Hungary has already halted exports of gasoline and diesel to its neighbor.

Andrii Sybiha, Ukrainian Representative: 'In essence, this is a case of Hungary taking hostages and stealing money.'

This seizure highlights the severe deterioration in bilateral relations, fueled not only by this specific incident but by broader geopolitical disagreements. The exchange of accusations and imposition of economic measures risk further escalation, potentially damaging economic ties between the two nations. For Ukraine, managing this crisis is vital to safeguarding its regional interests and preventing further complications with neighboring states.
