Diplomatic Exchange Between Andrii Sybiha and the Apostolic Nuncio

According to МЗС: Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has met with Archbishop Visvaldas Kulbokas, the Vatican’s Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, to review the latest high-level exchanges. These included the recent trips to Ukraine by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher and Cardinal Matteo Zuppi. The talks covered future steps in Kyiv’s dialogue with the Holy See, humanitarian matters, protecting Ukraine’s Christian and cultural heritage, and the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra ahead of its 975th anniversary. The two sides also discussed commemorating the 25th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit to Ukraine.

Sybiha noted:

“We value the Holy See’s sustained attention to Ukraine, its humanitarian support, and its solidarity with our people during these difficult times.”

Humanitarian cooperation was also central to the meeting, especially joint efforts to bring Ukrainians back home. The participants gave particular attention to preserving Ukrainian Christian and cultural heritage, which has been systematically targeted by Russian attacks.

Efforts to Rebuild the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra

The restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, along with preparations for its 975th anniversary, was a key focal point of the talks. Sybiha also confirmed the two sides’ agreement to keep working closely and to add new practical initiatives to the Ukraine–Holy See dialogue. He said:

“We have agreed to continue close cooperation and to fill the dialogue between Ukraine and the Holy See with fresh practical initiatives.”

The encounter highlighted the significance of mutual support and partnership between Ukraine and the Holy See amid today’s challenges.

The meeting came as Ukraine continues to contend with persistent challenges, notably Russian aggression that threatens its cultural and historical landmarks. A stronger relationship with the Vatican could bolster Ukraine’s international standing, support humanitarian projects, and contribute to protecting cultural sites. The talks are part of a broader series of high-level contacts between Kyiv and the Holy See, and further dialogue is expected to open new opportunities for cooperation.

In light of the ongoing discussions regarding humanitarian cooperation, it is essential to consider the broader context of Ukraine's diplomatic efforts. Recently, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister has called on the Vatican to assist in the repatriation of all prisoners and deported children, emphasizing the urgent need for international support.
