New Post-Contract Deferral Rules Announced for Ukrainian Military Personnel
Updated Military Deferral Conditions
According to Главком: Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has unveiled revised terms and timelines for deferrals granted to service members after their contracts end. Under the new policy, every soldier is guaranteed a minimum six-month deferral. However, the total length of this period will vary based on contract type, prior service duration, and combat involvement.
Fedorov explained that separate calculation methods will apply to different contract categories, factoring in combat experience and years of service. For instance, a civilian who signed a 14-month infantry assault contract and spent four months in combat will receive a 12-month deferral, plus the guaranteed six months, totaling 1.5 years. In another example, an active service member who signed a 10-month contract in 2021 will have six months added to the guaranteed deferral for each year of service from 2022 onward, plus one month for each year before 2022. This means that after completing their contract, this soldier would be entitled to a deferral of three years and seven months.
Major Overhaul of Military Service System
Alongside these announcements, details emerged about a sweeping transformation of Ukraine's military service system, which began on June 12. The first phase of this reform introduces new contract options, significantly higher pay, simplified transfers between units, and a phased release of soldiers who have served the longest on the front lines.
"Those who have defended the country longer should receive more time to recover after their service ends."

This initiative is the result of collaboration between the Ministry of Defense, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi. It aims to ensure that military personnel have proper conditions after fulfilling their service obligations.
These changes to the deferral system and broader military reforms reflect the Ukrainian government's growing focus on the needs of service members operating under wartime conditions. Providing better recovery opportunities after service could boost troop morale and motivation. The introduction of new contracts and increased pay may also serve as key steps in attracting new recruits to Ukraine's Armed Forces.
In addition to the newly announced deferral rules, the Ukrainian military is undergoing significant reforms that include enhanced contract options and increased salaries for personnel. This comprehensive overhaul not only aims to improve the welfare of service members but also addresses the challenges faced by those who have served on the front lines.
