Vertical Corridor Launches Two New Gas Routes to Ukraine: Project Details

Gas via new routes for Ukraine
Запуск нових газових маршрутів в Україну: деталі проекту.

The independent gas transmission system operator ICGB, together with operators from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, is preparing to launch two new interstate gas supply routes - Route 2 and Route 3.

Initiated by the 'Vertical Corridor', aimed at increasing the transportation of gas to Ukraine and strengthening the energy security of the region, Route 2 will run from the LNG terminal in Greece through Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova to the Ukrainian border, providing direct access to liquefied natural gas. Route 3 will come from the connection of the TAP and IGB pipelines and will also head towards the Ukrainian border.

These routes will enhance the significance of ICGB as a key transport hub connecting southern gas supply sources with the markets of South-East Europe, Ukraine, and Moldova. Operators have agreed to provide a 25% discount from the standard monthly tariff, and ICGB, together with the 'Operator of the GTS of Ukraine', has offered a record 46% discount for the region. Supplies are planned to be carried out through a single auction with a fixed price.

The transportation of gas via Route 1 to Ukraine began in July 2025, growing to 416 thousand cubic meters by August. In total, over 10 million cubic meters of gas were delivered during this period.

The full launch of Route 2 and Route 3 is awaiting final approval from the regulators of all countries through which they will pass. Ukraine joined the 'Vertical Corridor' initiative on January 19, 2024, joining seven participant countries along with Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Moldova.

It should also be noted that Ukraine will receive a record loan from EBRD for gas purchases.

The gas supply corridors from ICGB through the new interstate routes Route 2 and Route 3, which are fully supported by operators from different countries, will contribute to enhancing the energy supply security of the region. Ukraine, along with other initiative participants, is moving towards expanding supply opportunities and diversifying energy sources, which is an important step in its energy strategy.
