Swedish Gripen Fighters Headed to Ukraine

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine is set to receive its first shipment of Swedish JAS 39 Gripen fighter jets, equipped with long-range air-to-air Meteor missiles. Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Pavlo Palisa confirmed the development. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the aircraft will come armed with Meteor missiles, capable of striking targets up to 100 kilometers away.

Sweden and Ukraine have already finalized an agreement covering the procurement of up to 20 Gripen E/F variants, alongside the transfer of an additional 16 Gripen C/D models as part of bilateral assistance. Palisa noted,

“The Gripen was designed for warfare where aviation must operate swiftly and adaptively, using various forward operating bases, in a complex air defense environment and under constant enemy pressure.” - Pavlo Palisa

He added, “For Ukraine, the Gripen is not just a contribution to its own security. It is a contribution to the security of all of Europe.”

Addressing Ballistic Missile Threats

President Zelenskyy also addressed the country's defenses against ballistic missiles, stating, “We have no other means besides Patriot.” He highlighted existing agreements with France for the SAMP-T system and with Germany for future packages, but stressed, “We need to live now and protect people today.”

Furthermore, Zelenskyy has sent letters to the U.S. President and members of Congress requesting air defense systems. Regarding Russian aircraft, he commented:

“We believe we will be able to push these Russian planes back, and they will not be able to deploy glide bombs on a large scale.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

The delivery of Gripen fighters and Meteor missiles marks a significant step in bolstering Ukraine's defense capabilities and enhancing its security amid ongoing challenges. It also underscores Ukraine's active international defense cooperation, which is vital for ensuring national security and regional stability, especially in the face of Russian aggression.

As Ukraine continues to enhance its defense capabilities, the recent acquisition of Gripen jets is part of a broader strategy to secure its airspace. This new defense pact not only includes advanced aircraft but also emphasizes the importance of international support in countering threats.
