Italy Grants Ukraine €6 Million for First Major Irrigation Modernization Project
Italian Grant for Ukrainian Agriculture
According to Мін. Економіки: Italy has awarded Ukraine a €6 million grant, marking the first international funding the country has received for its hydraulic reclamation and irrigation sector. This grant is a significant step for Ukraine's agricultural development, specifically aimed at modernizing irrigation systems in the Odesa region. This support comes as Ukraine seeks to bolster its agricultural resilience and food production capacity.
The President of Ukraine has signed the law ratifying the Grant Agreement with the Government of the Italian Republic. This is the first international grant agreement in this field since the sector's reform began. The project will focus on modernizing the Tatarbunary and Kiliia irrigation systems. Planned measures include:
- Upgrading pumping equipment,
- Cleaning and restoring canals,
- Implementing automated water supply control systems.
More than 50 agricultural producers are expected to benefit from the project's results. Reliable irrigation will be secured across tens of thousands of hectares of farmland, which should improve crop yields and foster regional development.
The Significance of International Cooperation
Securing this grant from Italy is a major achievement for Ukraine, as modernizing irrigation infrastructure can significantly boost agricultural efficiency in the Odesa region. In an era of climate change and rising global food demand, investments in irrigation are increasingly critical for national food security. This project also underscores the importance of international collaboration in the fields of agronomy and environmental sustainability.
