Prisoner Exchange Between Ukraine and Russia

According to Главком: A fresh prisoner swap between Ukraine and Russia has brought 160 Ukrainian defenders home. Among those released, 16 are members of the Azov Corps, with one having directly fought in the defense of Mariupol. The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War specified that 115 of the freed individuals were defenders of Mariupol. In addition to soldiers and sergeants, the exchange also secured the return of 58 officers.

The majority of these service members were taken captive in 2022. Azov commander Denys Prokopenko has urged faster exchanges for Azov fighters, noting that over 600 of them have been in captivity for more than four years. He stressed the need to explore new strategies for bringing these soldiers back.

'I will not tire of reminding everyone that if all parties involved in the exchange process do not start seeking fresh approaches to repatriating Azov members, given the current pace of swaps, this could drag on for decades. The Azov fighters do not have that time. They are dying in captivity from torture. Every day, they lose their health due to lack of proper nutrition and medical care.' Denys Prokopenko

The previous prisoner exchange took place on June 5, when 185 defenders and one civilian returned home. Prokopenko also emphasized that now is the time to find a solution for the exchange of prisoners from the Azov brigade, as these individuals saved Ukraine at the start of the full-scale invasion. 'Will Ukraine repay them by saving them?' he asked. This latest swap once again highlights the need for continued efforts to bring back all Ukrainian soldiers still held in Russian captivity.

Ukraine's Humanitarian Policy

Prisoner exchanges represent a key component of Ukraine's humanitarian policy, focused on repatriating military personnel and civilians who have been taken captive. Prokopenko's remarks underscore the dire conditions faced by these soldiers and the urgent need for innovative mechanisms to secure their release.

This issue remains pressing amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, where many Ukrainian troops continue to languish in captivity, causing deep anxiety among their families and society at large.

As the situation continues to evolve, the recent exchange of 160 Ukrainian soldiers underscores the ongoing efforts to secure the return of all captured defenders. This latest development follows a previous swap on June 5, which saw 185 troops return home. The urgency for expedited exchanges, particularly for Azov fighters, remains critical amidst the ongoing conflict.
