Ukraine Halts Extension of Foreign Passports
Temporary Passport Use Policy Abolished
According to Radiotrek — Світ: The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has revoked a temporary policy on foreign passport usage that had been in effect from late February 2022 until October 28, 2025. This change carries significant consequences for Ukrainian citizens: passports whose validity was extended under that policy are no longer accepted for international travel. Individuals must now renew their documents to avoid complications when crossing borders.
What This Means for Travelers
The cancellation affects both adults and children whose passports included family member data recorded under the old rules. The Embassy of Ukraine in the Hellenic Republic has stated that
“after the repeal of this regulation, extended passports will no longer be accepted for travel abroad.”
Airlines may deny boarding, and foreign border authorities could refuse entry in such cases.
Ukrainians holding invalid foreign passports can apply for a temporary return certificate at an embassy or consulate. Passport validity is 10 years for individuals aged 16 and older, and 4 years for children under 16. A replacement is required if:
- the passport has expired;
- the document was extended under the temporary policy;
- the passport contains data on children or family members recorded under the old rules.
To obtain a new passport, citizens may contact Ukrainian embassies or consulates abroad, branches of the State Enterprise Document, units of the State Migration Service of Ukraine, or Administrative Service Centers (TSNAPs). The Embassy of Ukraine in Greece also emphasized that
“without a valid foreign passport, crossing borders and international travel are impossible.”
Therefore, Ukrainians planning trips abroad should urgently arrange for passport renewal to prevent potential travel disruptions.
This revocation of the temporary passport policy represents a major shift affecting many Ukrainians who intend to travel internationally. Citizens must be prepared to quickly obtain new documents to avoid delays and border-crossing issues. The decision also underscores the importance of adhering to current regulations governing international travel in a changing legal environment.
