Political Consultations Between Ukraine and Turkey

According to МЗС: High-level political consultations between Ukraine and Turkey took place in Kyiv, where both sides addressed a broad range of critical topics, including:

  • security
  • defense cooperation
  • trade and economic relations
  • energy
  • Ukraine’s reconstruction
  • consular affairs

Following the meeting, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership.

The consultations were led by senior officials from each country: Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Oleksandr Mishchenko and Turkey’s Deputy Foreign Minister Berris Ekinci. Before the session began, Mishchenko and Ekinci laid flowers at the Wall of Remembrance for fallen Ukrainian soldiers, underscoring the solemnity and symbolic weight of the event.

Key Topics Discussed

During the talks, participants explored various dimensions of the political dialogue and the implementation of agreements reached at the highest levels. Special emphasis was placed on security and defense cooperation, including collaboration in the defense-industrial sector. The parties also discussed enhancing security in the Black Sea region, ensuring freedom of navigation, and addressing food security.

Trade and economic ties, the dynamics of bilateral commerce, and energy cooperation were also major focal points. Mishchenko briefed the Turkish delegation on the security situation in Ukraine and outlined Kyiv’s efforts to achieve peace in line with the UN Charter. Additional discussions covered the functioning of the Coalition of the Willing and consular interactions.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mishchenko expressed gratitude to Turkey for hosting Ukrainian citizens and providing vacation opportunities for children. The Turkish delegation also toured an exhibition of Ukrainian weaponry displayed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. As a result of the consultations, both countries confirmed their intent to further deepen their strategic partnership across multiple sectors, laying the groundwork for future collaboration.

These talks come amid rising regional tensions and Ukraine’s pressing need to bolster its defense capabilities. Strengthening ties with Turkey could prove pivotal for ensuring stability and security-not only for Ukraine but for the entire Black Sea region. Enhanced cooperation in energy and defense, along with revitalized trade and economic relations, may positively influence Ukraine’s economic outlook and international standing.

The recent political consultations between Ukraine and Turkey come on the heels of a significant boost in bilateral trade, which has surged by 40%.
