Volodymyr Harmatii: Ukraine honors its hero as the 34th anniversary of his birth arrives
Volodymyr Harmatii, born 34 years ago
According to Велика українська енциклопедія: Volodymyr Harmatii came into the world on 4 August 1992 in the village of Cherneliv-Ruskyi, Ternopil region. Ukraine now marks what would have been his 34th birthday, remembering a man who died defending the country. He was killed on 25 July 2014 near Sievierodonetsk while taking part in the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine, and was laid to rest in his home village on 1 August 2014. He was later named Hero of Ukraine posthumously. For many Ukrainians, such commemorations have become a powerful way to reflect on the human cost of the ongoing conflict.
Service and sacrifice
Harmatii served as a junior lieutenant in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, attached to the 51st Separate Mechanized Brigade. In July 2014, his brigade held defensive positions near Chervonopartyzansk, then known as the urban-type settlement of Voznesenivka in Luhansk Oblast, close to the Russian border. He led a unit that planned fire strikes against the enemy. In 2016, he was posthumously given the title Hero of Ukraine for his actions.
Commemorating soldiers such as Volodymyr Harmatii has become a vital part of Ukraine's recent national narrative. It reflects the country's deep respect for the courage and self-sacrifice shown by its servicemen and women during the conflict in the east. His example is now seen as a symbol of Ukraine's struggle for independence and territorial integrity. Remembering him and others like him helps keep alive the memory of those who gave their lives for the country, while also underscoring the importance of military duty in modern Ukraine.
