The War in Ukraine and Emerging Challenges

According to ХВИЛЯ: In an interview with the Frontline project, British historian James Holland explained that the conflict in Ukraine has undergone a dramatic shift due to the use of drones and targeted attacks on Russian logistics and oil infrastructure. He emphasized that infantry remains essential for regaining territorial control. Holland also highlighted the isolation of Crimea, the ideological motivations of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the pervasive corruption within the Russian military.

A Fundamental Change in Warfare

According to Holland, Ukraine has fundamentally altered the nature of war:

“Through drones, it has effectively immobilized the front line while striking Russian logistics and oil facilities.”

The most notable actions involve deep strikes into Russian territory, particularly targeting the oil industry. At the same time, he noted that to achieve its goals, the Ukrainian Armed Forces must operate 25 to 50 miles (roughly 40 to 80 kilometers) from the front line, focusing on:

  • bridges
  • roads
  • key junctions
  • troop concentration areas
  • Russian oil and gas facilities

Holland also views the war as ideological for Putin, stating:

“Putin wants to build a new Russian Empire.”

He pointed to issues stemming from corruption in the Russian army, noting that “the corrupt military Putin built around himself with sycophants let him down as early as February 2022.” The most alarming factor, he added, is that losing in Ukraine makes Putin unpredictable.

Holland warned that 'to divert attention from defeat, he might provoke an incident,' such as seizing a village in Estonia or Lithuania to test NATO's Article 5, or sabotaging undersea cables in the North Sea. The expert stressed that Europe must prepare for potential provocations. He also urged the United Kingdom to urgently rebuild its navy and boost defense spending, as the situation in Ukraine demands serious attention and action from European nations.

James Holland's remarks underscore the need to adapt military strategies in modern conflicts, especially with technological innovations like drones. The focus on the war's ideological dimensions also suggests a risk of further escalation if Russia perceives its imperial ambitions as threatened. This, in turn, highlights the importance of continued Western support for Ukraine and readiness for potential Russian provocations, which could significantly impact regional security.

As the conflict evolves, it's essential to understand the broader implications of drone warfare in Ukraine. Insights from military experts reveal how these advancements are reshaping strategies and tactics on the battlefield, highlighting the significant shift in modern warfare dynamics.
