Ukraine Appeals to E5 Nations to Enhance Air Defense and Double Drone Output by 2027
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Calls on E5 Countries for Support
According to Мін. Оборони: Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Yevhen Khmara, has reached out to the defense ministries of the E5 nations-Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Poland, and Italy-urging them to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities by supplying interceptor missiles and man-portable air-defense systems (MANPADS). Strengthening air defense remains Ukraine’s top priority, as the country has existing contracts for future deliveries of interceptor missiles. To meet immediate needs, Khmara proposes a temporary exchange: sharing a portion of current missile stockpiles now in return for replenishments later. This includes a request for 10% of available interceptor missiles, specifically those used in Patriot and IRIS-T systems.
Purchases of interceptor missiles are funded through a loan backed by the European Union. Ukraine also highlights the urgent need for MANPADS to counteract rocket-powered drones, hoping to finance new acquisitions and secure transfers from allied stockpiles. The second major focus is on unmanned aerial systems. Ukrainian manufacturers have the capacity to double drone production by 2027, but achieving this requires timely financial support.
"Our goal is not just to increase purchases but to scale up joint production of Ukrainian drones in partner countries. This approach will boost manufacturing capacity, ensure Ukraine receives the drones it needs, and simultaneously strengthen our partners’ defense capabilities," Khmara stated.
Yevhen Khmara
Ukraine is committed to achieving a just and lasting peace, which Khmara says depends on maintaining strength, readiness to defend, and making prompt decisions.
Ukraine’s Critical Defense Priorities
The E5 countries addressed by the minister include Germany, the UK, France, Poland, and Italy. Ukraine’s essential defense requirements remain focused on:
- Enhancing air defense systems
- Expanding unmanned aerial vehicle capabilities
This appeal underscores the urgency of reinforcing Ukraine’s defense amid ongoing threats. Upgrading air defense is a cornerstone of Ukraine’s strategic security, providing vital protection against aerial attacks. Moreover, collaborative drone manufacturing and stronger international partnerships could significantly improve Ukraine’s resilience against aggression while fostering growth in the regional defense industry.
As Ukraine seeks to enhance its defense capabilities, the importance of international funding becomes increasingly evident. In a related appeal, the Defense Minister has reached out to the EU for financial support to secure essential missiles and counter-drone measures. This funding is crucial not only for immediate needs but also for long-term strategic goals.
