Russia drops 1950s bombs on Ukraine: how Soviet weapons work
Unlike Ukraine, Russia has not destroyed its old Soviet weapons, and now these weapons are used by the enemy on the battlefield. The occupiers are using heavy weaponry from the Stalin era in the war against Ukraine, including KABs, guided aerial bombs from the 1950s.
“In aerial bombs, the caliber is measured not in millimeters but in kilograms. The 'five-hundred' is the main bomb. Most often, the Su-24M carries such bombs, weighing 500 kg. They are suspended under the wings of the aircraft using special holders,” said the expert.
Ukraine also uses old Soviet weapons. For example, air-to-air missiles of the R-60 class are mounted on Su-25 attack aircraft and Su-24M bombers for defense. Additionally, Ukraine's long-range cruise missile 'Flamingo' is already being produced in series, with plans to deliver around 200 units each month.
Some countries, such as Russia, have left the old Soviet weapons unselected. This has led to these weapons now being used in conflicts, including the war in eastern Ukraine. At the same time, Ukraine is utilizing old weapons for defense and its own production of new combat systems.
