Ukrainians are being sold fake dollars and euros: which banknotes are the most frequently counterfeited
According to hvylya.net: The increase in the number of counterfeit foreign banknotes has caused outrage among financial experts and citizens of Ukraine. According to the National Bank of the country, in 2024, most of the withdrawn counterfeit foreign currencies were US dollars.
Such counterfeits can be noticed immediately by several signs. Firstly, it is the quality of printing and color, which can be poor on counterfeits. Secondly, counterfeits often lack security features such as a watermark. And the last difference is the texture of the paper on which the banknotes are printed.
- The first distinguishing feature is the color and quality of printing. Counterfeits often have blurred or unclear images, and the shades may have incorrect saturation.
- The second sign is the absence of security features. A watermark on real banknotes is visible from both sides when illuminated, while it may be absent or poorly imitated on counterfeits.
- The third characteristic is the texture of the paper. Genuine banknotes are printed on special paper with cotton fibers, which has a unique texture, while counterfeits are usually smooth or too soft.
The National Bank recommends that citizens who doubt the authenticity of hryvnia or foreign currency banknotes contact banking institutions for expertise. The examinations are conducted absolutely free of charge, and real foreign currency banknotes are returned to the owner, even if they are worn or damaged. However, counterfeit banknotes are withdrawn without compensation for their value.
Fake foreign banknotes are becoming an increasing problem in Ukraine's financial system, so national experts urge vigilance and to check money before conducting transactions. It is also important for citizens to immediately report to law enforcement agencies in case of discovering counterfeits to prevent further dissemination of fake money in the country. The National Bank is strengthening control and doing everything possible to reduce the impact of counterfeit banknotes on the country's economy.
