Darya Tetervak’s Journey Settling in Germany
According to УНІАН — Туризм: Darya Tetervak, a Ukrainian who relocated to Germany, has been granted social housing along with essential aid, including a package of food and household items. She documented her process of settling in and navigating bureaucratic procedures through TikTok. Currently, Darya shares a room in the social housing facility with a friend. Upon arrival, the first task was to clean the room, which was left in a dirty condition.
Support Package and Administrative Steps
The assistance package provided to Darya contained basic necessities such as:
- food items like cookies, instant soups, and pasta
- cups, plates, and cutlery
The accommodation, located within a campus setting, is furnished with a mattress, bedding, a large wardrobe, mirrors, a table, and two chairs. The day after moving in, Darya began the paperwork process, which included registering her residence and opening a bank account to receive social benefits.
'We were placed in social housing and given the keys right away. They also provided a food package for the initial period. It included cookies, instant noodles, soups, and pasta. It should be enough for the beginning.' - Darya Tetervak
Another Ukrainian living in Germany shared that while supermarkets operate until 10 PM, fresh bread and vegetables are usually sold out by 4 PM. This creates extra challenges, especially since Saturdays become hectic with grocery shopping, laundry, and cleaning, activities that are prohibited on Sundays.
Darya’s story and those of other Ukrainians highlight both the challenges faced by newcomers in Germany and the support systems in place to assist them during their transition.
The influx of Ukrainian migrants into Germany brings to light the urgent need for rapid adaptation to unfamiliar living conditions and administrative requirements. While social housing and basic aid provide crucial relief, difficulties such as limited access to fresh food indicate that improvements in immigrant support services remain necessary.
