Ukrainian Officials Visit Sweden to Study Child Support Model

According to Міністерство соц. політики: A Ukrainian delegation, led by First Deputy Minister of Social Policy Liudmyla Shemelynets, traveled to Sweden to examine the Barnahus model-a framework designed to assist children who have experienced violence. During the working visit, the group met with Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden, whose charitable foundation, World Childhood Foundation, has been a strong supporter of Ukraine.

The delegation's primary goal was to exchange knowledge on implementing the Barnahus approach, which serves as a comprehensive system for child and family support and protection. This center showcases how integrated services can be coordinated around a child, providing medical, psychological, social, and legal assistance all in one place.

Deepening Ties with Sweden

Liudmyla Shemelynets highlighted the significance of collaboration with Sweden:

“Ukraine greatly values Sweden's partnership and leadership in advancing child care and protection reforms. As our country enters a critical phase of reform implementation and works to bring back and reintegrate children affected by war, we see substantial opportunities to strengthen our cooperation.”

The Ukrainian side also received insights on coordinating services, conducting child interviews, and providing support during legal proceedings.

The Queen's charitable foundation has been funding mental health recovery programs for Ukrainian children and has supported Ukraine throughout the full-scale invasion. Establishing a holistic child protection system remains a top priority for Ukraine's Ministry of Social Policy.

Studying Sweden's Barnahus model represents a key step for Ukraine as it reforms its child protection system, especially amid the war and the widespread post-traumatic stress affecting many children. This partnership with Sweden could lay the groundwork for adopting innovative approaches in social support for vulnerable children, potentially improving their recovery and reintegration into society.

As Ukraine seeks to enhance its child protection framework, insights from other nations play a crucial role. Recently, discussions between Germany and Ukraine focused on family support and mental health initiatives. These talks highlight the importance of international collaboration in improving child welfare systems.
