Ukrainian Drones Strike Russian Strategic Targets Nearly 1,000 km Inside Territory
Drone Strikes Hit Strategic Russian and Crimean Facilities
According to ХВИЛЯ: In a significant long-range operation, Ukrainian drones struck multiple strategic targets deep within Russia and occupied Crimea on the night of April 18. The attacks hit oil refineries, a fuel depot, and a seaport, with some targets located as far as 960 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. These strikes demonstrate Kyiv's growing capability to project force and target Russia's critical energy infrastructure far from the front lines.
Among the facilities attacked were two Rosneft oil refineries in the Samara region. A fire broke out at the Novokuibyshevsk refinery, located approximately 920 km from the combat zone. At the Syzran refinery, a tank farm was set ablaze. One drone crashed in a residential area on Gorky Street, about 2.5 km from the plant, but according to preliminary reports from Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, there were no casualties.
The Syzran refinery processes between 7 and 8.5 million tons of oil annually, producing gasoline, diesel and aviation fuel, fuel oil, and bitumen.
Additional Targets and Wider Impact
Further strikes hit a fuel depot in Tikhoretsk in the Krasnodar region, roughly 420 km from the frontline, and the Vysotsk seaport in the Leningrad region, situated 960 km from the border. Separately, a fuel depot in the Kazacha Bukhta district of occupied Sevastopol was attacked, where the Russian-installed governor reported a downed unmanned aerial vehicle that caused a fire in a storage tank.
Recall that a fire continues at an oil refinery in Tuapse following an attack on the night of April 16.
This is not the first assault on Crimea's fuel infrastructure. Previous targets have included:
- The ferry in Feodosia;
- The main oil depot in Feodosia;
- Facilities in Oktyabrskoye;
- Facilities in Hlyboke.
These events mark a significant escalation, highlighting the use of advanced drone technology to strike an adversary's critical infrastructure. Attacks on refineries and other strategic assets can severely impact Russia's energy security and heighten regional tensions, potentially prompting new military or political responses from Moscow.
The recent drone strikes highlight a broader strategy by Ukrainian forces, which includes targeting critical energy facilities beyond the front lines. In a related incident, Ukrainian forces also targeted the Kirishi oil refinery, causing significant damage to essential processing units. This escalation in offensive operations underscores the ongoing efforts to disrupt Russia's energy supply chain.
