Ukrainian Drones Strike Russian Patrol Vessel Nearly 1,000 Kilometers from the Front Line
Drone Attack on Russian Border Guard Ship
According to Главком: On the night of May 17, operators from Ukraine’s 1st Separate Center launched a drone strike against a Russian border patrol vessel of Project 10410 (Svetlyak) near Kaspiysk in the Republic of Dagestan, approximately 986 kilometers from the front line. The targeted ship, a third-rank vessel, is designed to protect territorial waters, conduct patrols, and counter surface and aerial threats. This operation highlights Ukraine’s growing ability to hit distant military assets deep inside Russian territory.
Series of Strikes on Military Targets
Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces Robert Brovdi reported that the same night saw a series of strikes on military targets in occupied regions. These strikes hit locations in:
- Luhansk Oblast
- Donetsk Oblast
- Zaporizhzhia Oblast
- Crimea
Additionally, that night Ukrainian drones carried out the largest attack on the Moscow region since the start of the full-scale war.
These events mark an escalation in Ukrainian operations in the area. In November 2024, Ukrainian drones also attacked the port in Kaspiysk, demonstrating the increasing effectiveness of such missions. Furthermore, on the night of May 15, defense forces struck a small missile ship of the Karakurt project and a minesweeper at their base in Kaspiysk, adding to the list of targets hit. The Karakurt vessel is capable of launching Kalibr cruise missiles, underscoring the serious threat it posed.
The recent strikes reflect a surge in Ukrainian force activity in response to Russian aggression. The ability of Ukrainian drones to deliver precise hits at such great distances from the front line points to enhanced military capabilities and strategic planning. This could significantly influence the conflict’s trajectory and the strategies of both sides moving forward.
As Ukrainian forces continue to demonstrate their enhanced operational capabilities, a recent attack on Russian supply lines near Mariupol highlights the strategic depth of these military actions. This escalation underscores a pattern of targeted strikes that disrupt logistical support for Russian troops.
