War-Torn Ukrainian Forests Face 60-Year Recovery Timeline

Environmental Toll of the War in Ukraine

According to Главком: According to Yakiv Didukh, an academician at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the country's forest ecosystems have suffered their greatest losses since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. The primary damage stems not from direct combat but from widespread wildfires and an extensive network of trenches. A particularly devastating ecological blow has been the near-complete destruction of the Serebryanskyi Forest in Luhansk region, along with the loss of a unique habitat of relict chalk pine forests within the Sviati Hory National Park-an area listed under Resolution No. 4 of the Bern Convention.

While steppe regions have been less affected by fires, they remain heavily contaminated with landmines. Surveys in Kherson and Mykolaiv regions reveal that vast tracts of land may remain unsuitable for grazing or haymaking for decades. Reestablishing a fully functional forest after such extensive destruction is a slow process, likely requiring at least 60 years.

Water Pollution and Broader Ecological Damage

In Odesa region, severe pollution has been recorded in the waters and sandy barrier of the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park. Vegetable oil spilled as a result of Russian strikes on port infrastructure has contaminated an area of roughly 10,000 square meters.

'When we lose a forest, we lose not just timber but also herbaceous plants, animals, and soil microorganisms. It triggers a chain reaction.' Yakiv Didukh

These findings underscore the severity of the war's environmental impact on Ukraine's natural resources.

Such ecological losses highlight how deeply the conflict affects not only the population but also the environment. Restoring both forest and steppe ecosystems will demand substantial effort and time, potentially complicating Ukraine's environmental situation for many years to come. These challenges require urgent action, as ecosystem health directly influences people's livelihoods and the region's economic stability.
