For the First Time, River Levels Across Ukraine Have Sunk Below Historical Record Lows

Persistent Low-Water Conditions in Ukrainian Rivers

According to Мін. Економіки: By August 3, most of the country’s rivers were experiencing sustained low-water conditions. At certain monitoring stations, water levels had dropped below any previously recorded minimum. The cause is a combination of extended heat waves, scarce rainfall, and higher evaporation, which together produced an exceptionally shallow summer low-flow period on rivers throughout Ukraine.

Most Affected River Basins

The hardest-hit waterways are in the Carpathian region and among the tributaries of the Middle Dnieper, the Pripyat, and the Southern Bug. At gauging stations on the Dniester, Orava, Rika, Vicha, Turia, Western Bug, Turiya, Styr, and Southern Bug, current water levels are below the minimum values logged since the beginning of observation records. This situation has raised alarm among water users. During July, special water-use restrictions were introduced for 185 water users across various regions. The Ministry of Economy and Environment, the State Water Resources Agency of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center continue to monitor the situation and are studying the effects of the low-water period as well as possible response measures. If this trend persists, the consequences could be serious for farming, drinking-water supplies, and natural ecosystems. The restrictions already in place highlight the pressing need to manage water resources in a changing climate with more frequent extreme weather events, while continued monitoring and research could help shape effective strategies for the future. The current situation raises important questions about water security in the face of changing weather patterns.
