Russian Oil Exports Halted After Ukrainian Strikes on Key Baltic Ports

Ukrainian strikes on ports of the Gulf of Finland
Постійні удари України призвели до зупинки постачання нафти з Росії через важливі порти Балтики.

Ukrainian Attacks Disrupt Russian Oil Exports

According to Главком: Ukrainian strikes on Russian ports along the Gulf of Finland have forced a temporary halt to oil exports via this route, dealing a significant blow to Russian revenue. The attacks have effectively blocked shipments from the ports of Ust-Luga and Primorsk, which together handle 40-50% of Russia's total exported oil products. This disruption comes as Estonian intelligence reports a record surge in Russian offensive activity, noting that Russia launched an air assault on Ukraine this week using nearly 1,000 drones.

Frontline Developments

Intense fighting continues in the areas of Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk in Donetsk region, as well as near Huliaipole in Zaporizhzhia. Russian forces have made some advances toward Sloviansk, but Ukrainian countermeasures have pushed the frontline back. During a week of offensive operations, Russia sustained heavy losses, including:

  • over 11,000 military personnel;
  • approximately 80 armored vehicles;
  • around 300 artillery systems.

Ukrainian defense forces also inflicted damage on a Russian oil refinery, confirming strikes on critical equipment at the Kirishinefteorgsintez facility in Leningrad Oblast.

This is undoubtedly a serious blow for Russia, as the country exports 40-50% of its oil products through the ports of Ust-Luga and Primorsk. At least in the short term, this will significantly impact Russian revenues.

The situation in the region remains tense, with Ukrainian actions continuing to impact both the military and economic situation in Russia. Restoring oil exports through these ports could take considerable time, creating further strain on a Russian economy already under pressure from international sanctions. The Gulf of Finland is a critical maritime outlet for Russian energy, making these strikes strategically significant. Future military actions and strategic decisions by both sides are likely to shape the conflict's course and its wider economic consequences.

The disruption of oil exports through the Gulf of Finland highlights the growing impact of Ukrainian military actions on Russia's economy. This situation is not isolated; recent drone strikes have further crippled key terminals, raising concerns about the future of Russian energy exports.
