Weather Forecast for Ukraine on February 5th
According to ХВИЛЯ: The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center has issued a weather warning for the country on Monday, February 5th. A frosty, overcast day is expected, featuring stark temperature contrasts, precipitation in the form of snow and wet snow, widespread icy road conditions, and powerful winds. This combination of hazards is typical for Ukrainian winters but requires public caution.
Precipitation is forecast for most northern, central, and Mykolaiv oblasts, where it will fall as snow. In the western regions, as well as Vinnytsia and Odesa oblasts, light wet snow and rain are expected, while the rest of the country will remain dry. Nighttime temperatures in the east will plunge to as low as -22°C (-8°F). Conversely, the south and Zakarpattia will see daytime highs of up to +9°C (48°F).
A southeasterly wind will blow at 7-12 m/s (16-27 mph). During the daytime, storm-force gusts of 15-20 m/s (34-45 mph) are anticipated in the western, southern, Zhytomyr, and Vinnytsia oblasts. In the northeast and east, expect nighttime frosts of -14°C to -19°C (7°F to -2°F), locally dropping to -20°C to -22°C (-4°F to -8°F), with daytime temperatures of -8°C to -13°C (18°F to 9°F). Across most other areas, nighttime readings will be -7°C to -12°C (19°F to 10°F), warming to -3°C to -8°C (27°F to 18°F) during the day.
Temperature Conditions and Their Impact on Daily Life
In western and southern oblasts, expect -1°C to -6°C (30°F to 21°F) at night, with daytime temperatures ranging from -3°C (27°F) to +2°C (36°F). In Zakarpattia and Crimea, temperatures will hover around 0°C (32°F) at night, rising to +4°C to +9°C (39°F to 48°F) in the afternoon. Kyiv and the surrounding region will experience cloudy skies with moderate snow at night and light snow during the day, leading to slippery roads. Temperatures in the capital will be -8°C to -10°C (18°F to 14°F) at night and -4°C to -6°C (25°F to 21°F) during the day.
“Icy patches are expected on roads in places,” the Hydrometeorological Center noted.
The forecast for February 5th indicates significant and disruptive temperature swings across Ukraine, which are likely to affect transport and daily routines. The combination of black ice and high winds significantly increases the risk of traffic accidents, urging drivers to exercise extreme caution. Commuters should also prepare for potential delays, particularly in the eastern and western regions, due to the adverse conditions.
