Doctors in front-line communities to receive state bonuses through 2026 as Ukraine extends support program
Extended funding for hospitals and medical staff in war-affected regions
According to Главком: Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has decided to continue a financial support program for medical facilities and doctors operating in front-line communities and active combat zones until the end of 2026. The extension was approved to ensure hospitals have the necessary funds to cover payroll costs. Originally set to expire on June 30, the program has been renewed as the government recognizes the critical need for healthcare services in these high-risk areas.
What’s new in the program
Under the updated terms, hospitals providing specialized medical care in active combat zones will receive additional monthly payments during the second half of 2026 to help finance their payroll.
“In the second half of 2026, medical institutions offering specialized care in areas of active hostilities will get extra funds each month for their salary funds. This program was supposed to end on June 30, but the government has extended it through the end of 2026,” said Yuliia Svyrydenko.
In addition, the program boosts funding for primary care facilities, which will now receive 20% more for each patient declaration.
“Emergency medical services have also received increased financial support,” she added.
These measures reflect the government’s commitment to strengthening healthcare amid the country’s challenging circumstances.
Furthermore, the Cabinet has expanded eligibility for young doctors to receive a one-time grant of 200,000 UAH (approximately $5,400) upon employment. Previously limited to graduates working in active combat zones or rural areas, the grant now also covers young doctors who take jobs in healthcare facilities located in areas of potential hostilities-excluding Kyiv region and the major cities of Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kharkiv, and Chernihiv.
“The work of medical professionals in communities close to the combat zone is absolutely vital. Our goal is to equip them with everything they need and create conditions that allow them to continue delivering quality care to people,” Svyrydenko emphasized.
The decision to prolong financial backing for hospitals and doctors-especially those in front-line territories-highlights the essential role of healthcare services during wartime. The government aims not only to sustain existing medical institutions but also to attract new specialists, a crucial step for ensuring proper medical coverage in conflict zones. These actions could significantly improve the quality of healthcare across Ukraine, particularly in regions facing heightened risk.
As the government continues to prioritize healthcare in conflict-affected regions, recent measures also include enhanced funding for hospitals and increased salaries for medical staff. These initiatives are crucial as winter approaches, ensuring that healthcare facilities are well-prepared to meet the challenges ahead.
