The government approved Ukraine's strategy in Antarctica and the Arctic for 10 years
Strategy for ensuring Ukraine's national interests in Antarctica, the Arctic, and the World Ocean
According to МЗС: On February 6, 2026, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted the Strategy for ensuring national interests and development of Ukraine's activities in Antarctica, the Arctic, and the World Ocean for 2026-2035. Along with this, the Operational Plan of actions for the implementation of this Strategy for 2026-2028 was approved. This event took place on the day of the 30th anniversary of raising the Ukrainian flag at the Antarctic station 'Academician Vernadsky'.
The initiator of the strategy development was the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, which received support from the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. At a special meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, a decree was adopted regulating Ukraine's activities in the mentioned regions. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiga emphasized the symbolism of adopting the strategy on this date, noting that 30 years ago Ukraine officially raised its flag at the station 'Academician Vernadsky', which was transferred to Ukraine from Great Britain.
Andriy Sibiga also emphasized the important strategic and geopolitical significance of Ukraine's systematic presence in Antarctica, the Arctic, and the World Ocean. This activity creates additional foreign policy tools, strengthens Ukraine's national security, and enhances its position on the world stage, which is important in the context of countering the aggressive policies of the Russian Federation in these regions.
Cooperation and international presence
According to the adopted strategy, active cooperation with the National Antarctic Scientific Center and other agencies is planned. There are about 30 countries worldwide that have a presence in Antarctica, as well as countries like Poland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, which have similar strategies. The implementation of this strategy demonstrates Ukraine's maturity as a state that seeks to build a long-term foreign policy in strategic regions.
The adoption of this strategy highlights the importance of active international cooperation and scientific research in the face of global challenges.
Andriy Sibiga
Ukraine, seeking to strengthen its presence in strategic regions, has the opportunity not only to secure its national interests but also to contribute to global ecological and scientific initiatives. This could be an important step towards enhancing Ukraine's international image and strengthening its positions on the global stage.
