Significant Discovery in Cova de la Font Major Cave

According to УНІАН — Туризм: Archaeologists have uncovered at least 280 prehistoric rock carvings dating back approximately 19,000 years inside Cova de la Font Major, a cave located in Catalonia, Spain’s Tarragona province. This find represents one of the richest collections of ancient art along Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Researcher Josep Maria Verge, who led the excavation, documented 55 animal depictions among the engravings, including horses, deer, wild bulls, goats, and bears.

Although Cova de la Font Major has been open to visitors since 1957, these ancient artworks had gone largely unnoticed by the thousands who passed through. Josep Maria Verge explained:

“Since it was my first time working at this site and I was unaware of this side gallery, I decided to explore it. Almost immediately, among modern graffiti, I noticed a series of vertical lines that appeared to be ancient.” – Josep Maria Verge

This discovery offers valuable insights into prehistoric artistic expression and highlights the evolution of cultural creativity in early human societies. It also underscores the critical role of archaeological research in deepening our understanding of human history.

Other Noteworthy Archaeological Findings

In addition to this remarkable discovery, recent archaeological work elsewhere continues to shed light on ancient civilizations. For example, in Mitla, Mexico, researchers identified a measurement system used by the Zapotec people, featuring a length unit of roughly 8 cm connected to the 52-year Mesoamerican calendar cycle. Furthermore, scientists resolved a century-old mystery about distinctive pottery found in Tampa Bay, determining it was made using local clay combined with techniques from northern regions.

These findings illustrate the rich diversity of cultural heritage worldwide and remain a source of fascination for scholars globally.

The Cova de la Font Major engravings not only expand our knowledge of prehistoric art but also emphasize the importance of archaeology in reconstructing humanity’s past. These ancient carvings can reveal new information about the daily lives, beliefs, and artistic traditions of people who lived thousands of years ago. Similar discoveries around the world demonstrate that archaeology continues to evolve, opening fresh perspectives on the cultural legacies of different civilizations.

In light of this significant find, it's worth noting that similar discoveries have emerged in the region. For instance, over 280 prehistoric engravings showcasing both animals and geometric shapes were recently uncovered in Catalonia, further highlighting the area's rich prehistoric heritage and the importance of ongoing archaeological exploration.
