A fish has appeared in Ukraine that threatens the existence of many underwater inhabitants
The spread of the Amur goby in Ukrainian rivers
According to glavcom.ua: An unusual fish species for the country has appeared in Ukraine - the Amur goby. Ichthyologist at the I.I. Schmalhausen Institute of Zoology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Yuliya Kutsokon has reported that this fish has spread rapidly in Ukrainian rivers and causes significant damage to fish farms. It threatens the existence of many fish species due to its omnivorous nature, biting habits, and rapid reproduction.
It can eat both eggs and fry, which is a major problem for fish farms, as it actively consumes feed
The main reason for the appearance of the Amur goby in Ukrainian waters is global warming. As a result, a fish species that was previously characteristic of Japan and part of Asia is now actively spreading in our country.
It is difficult to fight this pest due to its intense reproduction. However, some fish species, such as pike and perch, may serve as natural predators of the goby. This species is also spreading in some ponds in Ukraine, creating problems for the preservation of fish biodiversity.
A threat to fish farms
It is noted that the absence of freshwater goldfish has already been recorded in many rivers of Ukraine, indicating a gradual loss of fish species diversity in the country's water bodies.
Ukrainian scientists warn about the spread of the Amur goby in the country's rivers due to global warming, which poses a threat to local fish farms and natural biodiversity.
