Ukraine Lacks Leverage Against Poland Over UPA Issue, Says Vyatrovych
Volodymyr Vyatrovych Weighs In on Tensions in Ukrainian-Polish Relations
According to Главком: Historian and lawmaker Volodymyr Vyatrovych has addressed the rising friction between Ukraine and Poland, triggered by disputes surrounding the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). He stated that Ukraine currently has no means to pressure Poland, leaving only the option of waiting for Polish society to 'come to its senses.' Vyatrovych noted some signs of improvement, such as statements from Polish Catholic bishops, veterans of the Solidarity movement, and Polish journalists.
Vyatrovych described the current tensions as a 'Polish hysteria,' arguing that the assessments coming out of Poland are disconnected from objective reality. He views the surge in anti-Ukrainian sentiment as a problem within Polish society.
“There are signs that this will eventually stop. But it’s certainly not something to expect in the near future,” he remarked.
Polish President’s Response and Its Repercussions
On June 19, Polish President Karol Nawrocki decided to strip Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle. This move followed a controversy over a Ukrainian military unit being named after UPA heroes. In response, several Ukrainian officials announced they would return their Polish awards. Zelensky himself stated that he had sent the order back to Poland by mail.
Vyatrovych also highlighted a rise in Nawrocki’s approval ratings, commenting:
“For now, this hysteria is converting very well.”
He emphasized that such policies harm not only Ukraine and Polish-Ukrainian relations but also Poland itself. 'They need to realize that this kind of policy is damaging,' the historian noted.
He argued that Poland and Ukraine should form the central axis in building a new security architecture.
“Meetings are happening in a format of Ukraine – Germany – France – Great Britain – minus Poland. That’s their choice of geohistory over geopolitics,” Vyatrovych added, pointing to the importance of collaboration between the two nations.
The current state of Ukrainian-Polish relations highlights the complexity of both countries' historical legacies and the need for dialogue to reach mutual understanding. The tensions over UPA-related issues reveal deep social and political divisions that require careful analysis and resolution. Cooperation between Ukraine and Poland is crucial not only for both nations but also for the broader region, especially in light of modern geopolitical challenges.
The ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Poland have escalated significantly, particularly following the controversial decision to revoke an honor from President Zelensky. This development has raised questions about the future of bilateral relations and the implications for regional stability.
