Cold-Resistant Battery Hydrogel Developed

According to НВ — Техно: By combining liquid metal particles with stearyl methacrylate, scientists have created a hydrogel that withstands freezing temperatures. This new material can stretch up to 900% of its original size without breaking and maintains its elasticity even at -20°C. Batteries built with this hydrogel achieved remarkable performance, retaining 98% of their efficiency after 45,000 charge-discharge cycles. The findings were published in the scientific journal Nano-Micro Letters.

How the Hydrogel Was Made

A team led by Professor Songjun Park developed the hydrogel. To produce it, the researchers broke liquid metal particles into tiny fragments using high-frequency sound waves-a method that avoided the need for additional heating or UV exposure. Stearyl methacrylate was also added to the material to enhance its properties.

This breakthrough could represent a major step forward in energy storage technology, offering not only frost resistance but also extended battery life under various operating conditions. The research team is continuing their work to explore new applications for this innovative material.

The development of a freeze-resistant hydrogel has the potential to significantly improve battery efficiency, which is especially important for portable devices and electric vehicles used in cold climates. This discovery may also help reduce environmental impact by boosting battery performance and decreasing the need for frequent replacements. As energy storage technology continues to evolve, materials like this hydrogel could become the foundation for future innovations in the energy sector.

In addition to the advancements in cold-resistant materials, researchers have recently unveiled a battery that boasts over 2,000 hours of uninterrupted operation. This innovation not only enhances energy storage capabilities but also emphasizes the ongoing evolution in battery technology, promising even greater efficiency and reliability for consumers.
