Mapping the Sun’s Coronal Magnetic Field in Three Dimensions

According to НВ — Техно: For the first time, researchers have successfully mapped the three-dimensional magnetic field structure of the Sun’s corona by applying a novel IQUD inversion technique combined with data from the CoMP and UCoMP instruments. Published on Phys.org, this breakthrough could significantly advance the modeling of solar activity and improve predictions of space weather.

The innovative method was developed by a collaborative team from key U.S. institutions, including:

  • The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR)
  • The National Solar Observatory (NSF NSO)
  • The Southwest Research Institute

The solar corona-the Sun’s outer atmospheric layer-generates complex magnetic fields critical to understanding solar phenomena. To create these 3D maps, scientists combined global 2D magnetic field maps with IQUD inversion, a technique analyzing waves propagating through the corona to extract magnetic field information.

Observations from the CoMP instrument at the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory in Hawaii were recorded on October 14, 2016, while data from UCoMP were collected on June 1, 2022. This research lays the groundwork for more accurate solar activity simulations and better forecasting of magnetic eruptions. Although promising, the technique requires further refinement and validation. To encourage broader scientific collaboration, the team has made the software and data publicly available.

"For the first time, we can begin to visualize the Sun’s hidden magnetic structure in three dimensions-not by building new ground- or space-based instruments, but by decoding light and waves already emanating from the solar corona." Alin Parasciv

Implications for Space Weather Prediction

This development marks a crucial advance in our understanding of solar processes that directly impact space weather-conditions in space that affect Earth’s satellites, power grids, and communication networks. Enhanced magnetic field models of the Sun will improve forecasts of solar storms and other space weather events that pose risks to modern technology. The introduction of this method also opens new possibilities for future solar research and monitoring efforts.

This groundbreaking research not only enhances our understanding of the Sun's magnetic field but also aligns with recent findings on solar phenomena. For instance, Chinese scientists have simulated magnetic reconnection that heats the solar corona to over a million degrees, providing further insights into the complex dynamics at play. Such studies are essential for improving our predictive capabilities regarding space weather events.
